Who is Dr. Alp Gurkan?
Prof. Alp Gürkan, MD, is a distinguished expert in organ transplantation and general surgery with over three decades of experience. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at Ege University in 1981 and completed his specialization in General Surgery at the same institution in 1989. Following his studies, he gained valuable experience at Yale University’s Cardiovascular Surgery Department and at Harvard University’s Women’s and Brigham Hospitals, where he received advanced training in organ transplantation.
Prof. Gürkan began his career in transplantation surgery in 1992, when he was tasked with establishing the Organ Transplantation Department at İzmir Tepecik SSK Training and Research Hospital. In 1997, he was promoted to Associate Professor. He made a significant contribution to the field by performing Turkey’s first small bowel transplant in 2003. Over the years, Prof. Gürkan has held leadership positions, including Head of the 3rd Surgical Clinic at Tepecik SSK Hospital and Professor of Organ Transplantation at Istanbul Gaziosmanpaşa Hospital, Istanbul Bilim University, and Medicana Çamlıca Hospital.
In addition to his clinical work, Prof. Gürkan has published over 200 articles in national and international journals and has received numerous awards from the Ministry of Health and the Izmir Medical Chamber. He is also an active speaker and session chair at scientific conferences worldwide.
Currently, Prof. Gürkan is a consultant doctor at Estexper Clinic, where he continues to provide expert care in organ transplantation and general surgery. His vast experience, combined with his ongoing commitment to advancing medical practice, makes him a highly respected leader in the field.
