Who is Dr. Mehmet Karaaltin?
Dr. Karaaltin is a distinguished plastic surgeon born in Kirkuk, Iraq, in 1972, who moved to the U.S. as an infant. He pursued his medical education at Istanbul University from 1990 to 2014, ranking 12th out of 25,000 in the Turkish medical specialization exam. After completing his residency in Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery at Hacettepe University, he became a fellow of the European Board of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery in 2012 and holds multiple certifications in related fields.
His academic career includes faculty positions at the University of Bezmialem and the University of Acibadem, where he has mentored junior surgeons. Dr. Karaaltin has made significant contributions to the field, authoring chapters in influential textbooks on aesthetic nose surgery and facial paralysis. He is known for his innovative techniques, particularly in aesthetic nose surgery, and has pioneered the SMART template technology. His work in microvascular surgery includes developing a novel muscle transfer technique for treating facial paralysis.
Dr. Karaaltin’s achievements extend to participating in groundbreaking medical procedures, such as the world’s third full face transplant and the successful separation of conjoined twins. He is actively involved in cellular therapy and regenerative medicine, with a focus on advancing microvascular lymph node transfer and establishing safety protocols for cosmetic procedures like the Brazilian Butt Lift. His expertise has been recognized with awards, including the “Best Experimental Paper” in Plastic Reconstructive Surgery in 2017, and he serves on the advisory board of the Global Stem Cell Group.
