Eyelid Surgery
Eyelid surgery, medically known as blepharoplasty, is a small operation with a big impact.
Radiantly beautiful eyes are associated with positive charisma and joie de vivre. However, the aging process of the eyes is particularly noticeable because of their central position on the face, making your appearance look tired and exhausted, although you don’t feel that way.
The skin around the eyes is particularly thin, which promotes the formation of wrinkles. Fat tissue bulges the loose skin outwards (bags under the eyes), the eyelids increasingly droop and, in extreme cases, can even cause a restriction of the field of vision. The speed of aging depends to a large extent on family predisposition. Active facial expressions or regular UV exposure of the skin (sunbathing) further accelerate the process.
What is an eyelid surgery?
The eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is one of the most common procedures in aesthetic surgery and eye surgery. It is performed on sagging upper lids or sagging tear sacs on the lower eyelid. Because eyes are in the center of our face, changes that occur with age are particularly noticeable. Drooping upper eyelids and bags under the eyes on the lower eyelids make the eyes appear smaller and the face look tired. An eyelid lift can permanently solve this problem.
Upper eyelid lift (remove droopy eyelids)
During the upper eyelid lift at Estexper Clinic, the excess skin is precisely measured and the incision is made accordingly. The surgeon removes the excess skin at the fold of the eyelid with a crescent-shaped incision and thus tightens the upper eyelid. In some cases, an additional tightening of the muscle or connective tissue can be useful in order to achieve a natural and lasting result. Depending on the indication, the upper eyelid can be tightened with simultaneous fat tissue reduction. Since the incision is made in the natural skin folds, subsequent fine scars are hardly visible. The later natural appearance is particularly important to us: The personal shape of the eyes should not change as a result of the procedure.
Lower eyelid lift (removal of tear sacs)
Depending on the findings, the lower eyelid lift at Estexper Clinic is performed either through an incision in the edge of the eyelid or from the conjunctiva (transconjunctival lower eyelid plastic). If there is excess skin, it is removed together with excess muscle and connective tissue, thus tightening the lid. If the tear sacs are present without excess skin, the surgeon selects access “from the inside” through the conjunctival sac. Protruding fat deposits are reduced in order to be able to remove the bags under the eyes. Here, too, subsequent scars are very difficult to see.
In order to prevent the eye from “slumping in”, it is important that not too much fatty tissue is removed. The method of extended lower eyelid plastic with marginalis release is ideal for this. The fatty tissue of the lower eyelid is connected to the fatty tissue of the midface in such a way that a harmonious transition from the eyelid to the cheek (lid-cheek junction) is created.
Before the eyelid surgery
Various points should be considered in order to ensure an optimal surgical and healing process. For example, you should refrain from taking certain medications some time beforehand. Particular attention must be paid to the intake of blood-thinning agents.
To avoid further problems, you should stop drinking alcohol and smoke a few days before the operation. If you like going to the solarium, you should refrain from visiting it and sunbathing for a week before the eyelid lift.
How long does the swelling after eyelid surgery last?
Although the procedure is so well over after one to two weeks that the patients can fully return to work and social life, patience is required. The full result of the eye lift is only visible after about two months, since only then has the swelling gone down completely. Depending on the extent of the procedure and the individual factors of the patient, the area around the eyes can be optically rejuvenated by up to 10 years with the help of an eyelid lift.
How long does it take to recover after eyelid surgery?
This varies depending on the person and the course of treatment. We will clarify this for you in an individual consultation.
What must be considered during an eyelid lift?
After an eyelid lift, you should refrain from exercising for at least 2-3 weeks. Also, you should not go swimming or do overhead work.
