Bariatric Surgery (weight loss surgery) is carried out with great expertise by extremely experienced surgeons from our section for minimally invasive and bariatric surgery at the surgical clinic in Estexper Clinic.
Various methods are available if patients want an operation to lose weight and improve concomitant diseases, especially type 2 diabetes mellitus, in Germany:

  • Gastric sleeve surgery
  • Roux Y gastric bypass (Gastric bypass)
  • Single-anastomosis duodeno-ileal bypass with sleeve (SADI-S)
  • Bilionpancreatic Diversion (Duodenal Switch)
  • Gastric Balloon
  • Gastric Band

In most cases, gastric sleeve surgery and gastric bypass are recommended. Which method is best for the person concerned is discussed individually with each patient.

Obesity Surgery

Bariatric Surgery
Why and when?

  • Prerequisites for an operation:
  • Severe overweight (BMI over 35) and any serious diseases associated with obesity, particularly type 2 diabetes mellitus

Obesity is a disease that is associated with many comorbidities, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure, fatty liver, dyslipidemia, and others. The quality of life is clearly limited.

Most therapies, such as dieting, do not result in sustained weight loss. If patients have already made unsuccessful attempts at therapy, surgical therapy could be a sensible next step.

Most patients benefit from bariatric surgery in the following ways:

  • Long-lasting weight loss – most patients lose around 60-80% of their excess weight within 2 years
  • Long-term increase in quality of life
  • The disappearance of type 2 diabetes mellitus
  • Significant improvement in other comorbidities (e.g. high blood pressure, fatty liver, dyslipidemia, sleep apnea)

Additional Advantages

For patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus

  • Diabetes mellitus often disappears within a few days to weeks after the operation, and patients require less or often no insulin or medication.
  • The occurrence of diabetic complications such as kidney damage leading to dialysis, heart attacks or amputations, and even pre-existing complications are significantly reduced.
  • The effects of bariatric surgery on type 2 diabetes or fatty liver are independent of the initial BMI. This means that these surgeries have the same effect on a slightly overweight diabetic as on a very overweight patient.
  • As a result, bariatric surgeries can prolong the lives of those affected.
